Hum Paanch is a sitcom based on the not-so-ordinary happenings in the Mathur household. As the title suggests, the serial highlights the characteristics of the five daughters of Mr. Anand Mathur and his wife, Bina. The episodes begin with individual characters and events relating to their doings resulting in hilarious situations. And not to forget, the constant interruptions by Mr. Anand’s dead wife.
Mathur is getting ready to go to office when each member of his family delays him. His family comprises of his wife Bina and his five daughters, and the spooky ghost of his first wife. Mathur's tryst with his daughter Kajal's school principal exposes him to her countless mischiefs. Mathur's numerous worries continue. His plight and they way he deals with it is worth a watch.
Bina leaves to visit a sick aunt. In her absence, Mathur fails to ensure the smooth functioning of their house in her absence. In trying to help their maidservant, from her brutal bullying husband, Meenakshi turns the house into a 'Mahila Mukti Sanghatana' office. The women of the so-called 'Mahila Mukti Sanghatana' throw Mathur out of his own home. He devises a plan to eliminate them forever from his home.
Mathur is perplexed when his dim witted but beautiful daughter Sweety 'THINKS' of a plan to become rich. He hesitates initially to hand her over the investment of hundred rupees. He faces opposition from the whole family including the soul of his dead wife. He finally relents and gives Sweety the desired investment. As the Mathur household grows prosperous, a notorious gangster kidnaps Mathur.
According to Mathur's daughters, a couple needs to fight at least three times a month to be termed as an 'ideal happy couple'. They conclude that their parents are not an ideal couple as they rarely fight. The kid's feel that they best way to start a fight between their parents, is to plant the seed of suspicion in their mother's mind about the infidelity of her husband. Their plans cause tremendous conflict between their parents. Bina leaves home.
The Mathur's find themselves alone as the kids have gone on a trip. They are in a romantic mood when Bina's mother arrives. The whole household is turned upside down by her, as she desires everyone to change their habits to please her. The girls devise a plan to get rid of their granny but their plan backfires.
Mathur has another guest in his house, his first wife's mother. The girls wreck havoc in the lives of the two old women. Both the grannies are upset with the girls and they plot to take revenge. Mathur is upset with the grannies. He schemes against them and turn the two old cronies into bitter enemies.
Radhika decides to stop using her hearing aid. She is forever misinterpreting what others speak to her. Repeated requests from her family to use the hearing aid yield no result and she continues her daily routine without the hearing aid...until she comes face to face with a youth who claims that Radhika and he are a 'couple in love'.
One day Mathur has an unexpected visitor, a long lost friend, who unfortunately turns out to be Bina's old flame. Mathur spends agonizing moments as Bina and her long lost friend bond over their old friendship.
Mathur is feeling very insecure due to the presence of Bina's 'Pappu'. The children too echo his sentiments. Bina puts them at ease when she explains that 'Pappu' is like a brother to her. Pappu seems to be the only one unhappy with this new title.
Kajal gets a walkman from a smugglers shop, given to her as 'hafta'. Mathur is livid. Bina and the kids coerce Mathur to invite his boss Popatlal for dinner and butter him up for Mathur's promotion. Mathur has to take Pandey to the hospital as he suffers from a heart attack. Popatlal arrives for dinner but becomes a victim of mistaken identity.
