Kaialavu Manasu

The story of two middle-class families of Sharada and Manjula are narrated in this television show. They are living difficult but content lives until a tragedy occurs in Sharada's life. The plot thickens as their new neighbour Kanchana tries to help in this crisis. Further on, Sharada faces many problems. How she handles these difficulties and the relationships that she nurtures in the process forms the rest of the story. As you watch this emotional and sensitive tale, we are sure you will enjoy this moving story.

Sharada (Geetha), her husband Senthilkumaran (Varadarajan) and her three children Jawahar, Vani and Selvi are a close-knit and content family. Senthilkumaran works as supervisor in a construction company, while his wife Sharada is a homemaker. We are also introduced to their neighbours Manjula (Renuka) who works as an insurance agent, her husband Manavalan (Krishnan) and his father Pandurangan (Charuhasan). Manavalan is unemployed and is a gossip-monger. Pandurangan is a lawyer. They have two children. They are all curious about Kanchana (Chitra), a rich, single lady who moves into the same neighbourhood. Their curiosity doubles when Panduragan tells them that she was once produced in court for prostitution. In this episode, Senthilkumaran and his wife Sharada have a heated argument. What is it that triggers it off in an otherwise compatible couple?

Sharada disocovers that she is pregnant for the fourth time. Her husband wants her to abort the child, but Sharada is unable to come to terms with this. Their new neighbour Kanchana interacts with Sharada's second daughter Selvi. Selvi is gifted with exceptional talent in music and this impresses Kanchana all the more. But Selvi's visit to Kanchana's house makes Sharada furious. On the other hand, Manjula tries her best to interact with Kanchana during a visit to the gynecologist, but Kanchana maintains a dignified silence. Kanchana discovers a shocking truth from the doctor. Her hopes are shattered.

Kanchana visits Sharada's house in an attempt to befriend her. But Sharada's harsh words hurt her deeply. Senthilkumaran meets with an accident. Sharada is unable to handle this. Manavalan's family offers her a lot of help and support. Kanchana also helps during this crisis. Senthilkumaran's brother and his wife arrive from Lucknow with a plan in mind. Does the innocent Sharada fall prey to this?

Senthilkumaran does not survive the accident. Sharada goes in for an abortion. Kanchana laments at the irony of fate as she learns that she will never be able to conceive. Sharada is in for more grief when she learns that her husband has borrowed money. She wonders how she can repay the debt. Meanwhile, Pandurangan recommends her for a job of a saleswoman at Haniffa Textiles. Sharada readily agrees. The children also adjust to accomodate their working mother. But Kanchana approaches Sharada with a suggestion that makes her furious.

Sharada meets with an accident. Though she recovers quickly, the doctors diagnose a bigger problem. They find that Sharada has a hole in her heart and that the treatment would be expensive. Manju and Sharada together try to raise funds for her treatment, but do not succeed. Pandurangan suggests to her that since her days are numbered, she should let childless and well-to-do couples adopt her children. Sharada zeroes in on one such couple for her son Jawahar.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert are willing to adopt Jawahar. Meanwhile, Pandurangan says he wants to remarry. This shocks his son Manavalanan and daughter-in-law Manjula. However, he does not disclose any information about the person whom he has chosen to marry. While Jawahar leaves home, Sharada's health deteriorates with each passing day. Kanchana offers a suggestion to Sharada, which she feels might lead her to a solution to her problems. Following her advice, Manjula and Sharada visit an astrologer.

Pandurangan asks his son and daughter-in-law to vacate the house they are residing in, within 90 days. They are confused and angry. Vani and Selvi are missing Jawahar and decide to visit him at his new home. They are amazed by the luxuries that have become a part of his life now. Sharada meets another couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ramalingam, who want to adopt a girl. They choose Vani. After an initial hestitation, Vani also leaves home. Jawahar discovers this when he comes to invite his mother for his birthday celebration. Sharada feels the seperation from her children to be more painful than her failing health.

Manju finds a photograph of a woman. She assumes it to be the picture of the person that Pandurangan is going to marry. Kanchana approaches Sharada again with regard to adopting her youngest child Selvi. Sharada refuses bluntly. On prodding further, Sharada tells her the reason behind her refusal which, in turn, makes Kanchana furious. But later, Sharada discovers how good-natured Kanchana is and this makes her change her mind. The deadline that Pandurangan has given his son is fast approaching and that worries Manju greatly.

The notice period given to Manavalan by his father has come to an end. But Manavalan surprises his wife and father by taking initiative. He has got a new job and has found a new house to move into. Happy that his plan has worked, Pandurangan also lets out a secret to his son. Kanchana adopts Selvi, but is disturbed by Sharada's presence in the vicinity. This forces Sharada to walk out of her home. She meets with an accident on the way, but is rescued by Gururengan (Prakash Raj) who not only admits her to the hospital, but also decides to fund her heart surgery. Will fate be kind to Sharada this time?

This epsiode takes us way into the future. We see an aged Gururengan and Sharada working together and living under the same roof. They have developed a beautiful and sensitive relationship, but refuse to get married to each other. We are also introduced to Velu Vadyar (Vali) and his wife Vadivu. Velu is a Tamil teacher and a poet and thinks that he can revolutionise society through his poetry. Gururengan's mother asks Velu to convince Gururengan to forget his past and marry Sharada. Will Gururengan and Sharada agree to give their relationship a new name?

We see that earlier, when Sharada tried to get in touch with her children, they had misunderstood her. So, she decides that she would not attempt to meet them in the future. Velu Vadyar and his wife Vadivu speak to their son, Captain Kandan, an army officer posted on the the UN Peace Keeping Force. Sharada reminisces about the past and is filled with gratitude when she thinks of all that Gururengan has done for her. She tells him that he has not only given her a new lease of life, but has also changed her life, career and attitude for the better.

Gururengan's mother asks Sharada to marry her son. Sharada is shocked. She meets her old neighbour and friend Manju. She also meets Manju's son Raja who is a young man now. She wonders how her son Jawahar is doing now? When she expresses the same to Gururengan, he offers to go to Chennai to look for him. Sharada learns that her son has become a film star. She decides to meet him. On the other hand, Velu Vadyar has to deal with his son's untimely death. But when Gururegan and Sharad go to his house to offer their condolences, they realise that his wife Vadivu is completely ignorant of the tragedy that has occured in her life.
