Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt) is a stern old man who believes that if a man doesn’t sport a moustache, he is not man enough. Ramprasad (Amol Palekar) has just graduated from college and is out looking for a job. Bhavani Shankar has a vacancy, but Ramprasad has to tackle two problems before he can land that job – he is clean-shaven and has a western outlook whereas Bhavani Shankar would only give the job to a man deeply rooted in Indian ethos and who sports a moustache! So, Ramprasad changes his attire, puts on a fake moustache and bags the job!
Bhavani Shankar is impressed with Ramprasad’s adherence to Indian values - until one day, when he catches him on TV enjoying a live soccer match. Bhavani Shankar is shocked to see Ramprasad in western clothes and without a moustache. The next day, when Bhavani Shankar confronts him, Ramprasad concocts a fake story about the person at the soccer game being his wayward twin brother, Lakshmanprasad! From hereon, Ramprasad has to live with dual identities in order to keep his job. Things get funnier when he falls in love with Bhavani’s daughter (Bindiya Goswami).
