Rajiv Gandhi's election had won for the Congress a victory greater than it had ever before. It was his personal appeal and not the party's that got the voters flocking to the booths. The victory represented a continuity and a change at the same time in a fundamental society that once voted on basis of castes, but which now chose to vote individually.
