Prabhu, a young millionaire, falls in love with a middle-class girl, Kamini, and marries her. Soon after marriage, Kamini realizes that Prabhu is a playboy. She discovers to her horror that Prabhu continues to have extra-marital affairs and that he has married her merely so that he can boast of having a beautiful wife. Kamini's mother advises her that being educated, she can take charge of her life. From hereon starts the story of Kamini trying to establish an independent identy for herself and her struggle to win her husband back.

Kamini meets Prabhu at a restaurant. Her first meeting with him is an unpleasant experience for her. After that, both keep bumping into each other from time to time. After a few meetings, Prabhu writes a letter to her parents, expressing interest in marrying Kamini. With the consent of Kamini and her parents, Prabhu marries her and brings her home. Dumbfounded by Prabhu's lavish lifestyle, Kamini realises that she can live the life of a queen. However, her happiness is short-lived. She gets a phone call from a girl called Shilaja who creates doubts in Kamini’s mind about Prabhu’s character.

Prabhu informs Kamini about the party at their house where he would be introducing her to his friends. At the party, Kamini feels uncomfortable with the way people talk and behave. She hears some comments about Prabhu which are not in good taste and she starts doubting Prabhu’s character.

A year of marriage passes by and Prabhu’s attitude becomes very irresponsible. Most of the times, he does not even come home at night. Then, one evening, he comes home with a girl. Kamini confronts him, but he just does not care. She is shocked and shattered. Next morning, she packs her bags and leaves home.

Kamini comes back to her mother’s house. All the family members enquire about her married life, believing her to be very happy. Kamini tells her mother the truth. She tells her that she had left Prabhu for good. Her mother is shocked and tries to convince her to go back to Prabhu.

Kamini’s mother advises her that her smartness will bring her husband back to her, so instead of running away from the problem, she should face it with courage. She adds that staying back with them will create problems not only for her, but also for the family. She will have to answer many unwanted questions that people might ask, she concludes. Adhering to her mother’s advice, Kamini decides to go back to Prabhu and fight her own battle.

Kamini’s attitude changes completely. Kamini’s maidservant comes back to her father leaving her husband for good her father too supports her. Kamini feels that she does not even have the guts that Shanbaghum has; neither she has the support of her parents like Shanbagum. She starts thinking about how to retaliate and bring her husband on track.

Prabhu being unusually nice informs Kamini about a party in the house and coaxes her to prepare for it. In the party Kamini is introduced to all his acquaintances, the party is a success. Praising Kamini for her good conduct in the party he slowly makes advances towards her.

Rekha’s daughter Maya wants to go for shopping, however Rekha refuses excusing herself for another engagement. Srinivasan promises to come home early and take her for shopping. Kamini takes Shanbagham to the abortion clinic. There she sees Rekha being bought out in a stretcher from the operation theatre. Prabhu calls Kamini and asks her to take Maya out for shopping. Kamini and Maya go out for shopping and visit an art gallery where they meet Prof. Dayanand.

Maya and Kamini come back from shopping and start playing chess. Prabhu comes home early and takes over the game from Kamini. Maya tells him about Dayanand. Kamini goes to Shanbagham’s house to meet her. Dayanand calls up Kamini, Prabhu picks up the call.

Prabhu shows his displeasure about Dayanand calling Kamini. Rekha and Srinivasan plan Maya’s birthday party. Maya invites Prabhu and Kamini for the party. Dayanand also comes to the party. Prabhu gives a cold reaction when introduced to Dayanand. He does not like Kamini being friendly with Dayanand.
